From his initial press release: SNELL TAKES UP THE BATON It’s finally official. Andrew Snell will take his first rehearsal as the new musical director of the Willoughby Senior Band on Monday 31 October, 2005. Snell, who was the driving force behind New Zealand’s Waitakere Band winning the Australian National Championships in 2003, brings with him the dedication and commitment you would expect from spending 11 years with the world famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band. As bass trombone player with Grimethorpe, Snell is used to pressure and doing whatever it takes to pull a performance together. “I am very much looking forward to getting in front of one of Australia’s premiere brass bands, and have already had calls from potential new players looking to join the team. There are a few seats which need filling, so I am more than happy to audition any interested parties” said Snell. Snell, who is currently studying for a Masters degree in performance on bass trombone, has been out of the brass band scene for the past two years while working in the Northern Territory. His move to Sydney also sees him take up the position of Orchestra Manager with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra. “Sydney offers many new challenges, a different lifestyle and musical opportunities both for me and my wife Lindsay. We have thoroughly enjoyed our time in Darwin but just can’t wait to dive head first into life in Sydney. It still seems a little strange that a Pommie trombonist will be going to work at the Sydney Opera House!” said Snell.
