Willoughby Band put in a good show at the recent Ern Keller Memorial 'Band of the Year' Competition held at St Marys Band Club.

The competition is one judged not only on music but also on entertainment.

4BarsRest Downunder had this to say on their website:

Conductor: Andrew Snell

Off to a great start with some unconventional yet effective choreagraphy to Intrada - Ein Festa Burg. Quickly, the band then moved into the upbeat Valero, played at an excellent tempo with great drive from the percussion.

Quite a few chuckles came from the audience as Andy Snell took to the microphone. "...the only band with a CV to rival Matthew van Emmerik", was one of Andy's lines - a style of humour we have come to know so well.

Danny Boy followed but did not flow quite so well and intonation was not always true. A lovely arrangement which bought back many memories of Brassed Off for the capacity audience.

It's Not Unusual, complete with a trombone section to rival the real Tom Jones - chest hair and all, was a lot of fun and audience pleasing.

Sparke's Graduation Fugue was musically the highlight for this band, with the fugue style well captured, and some great tutti sounds.

Band members and musical director alike were very pleased with the afternoon's playing, despite the fact that 'Prestige Brass' - a composite band put together specifically for the event - won the day.

Congratulations to Prestige Brass and their MD Mark Ford from Willoughby Band!

John and Rhiannon, two members of the Band, held a 'blessing and celebration' ceremony this past Saturday 1st December (a little like a wedding except they were already married!).

Willoughby Band stole the show with stirring renditions of the processional, the recessional, three hymns and before and after entertainment pieces. Conductor Andrew Snell very generously arranged 4 of the 5 ceremonial pieces for the 15-strong group, and the results were fantastic - professional arranging/composing here we come!

WIlloughby's principal cornet Brian McGuinness performed the solo trumpet parts with panache - a job particularly well done considering he was called in 2 days prior to the ceremony when the booked trumpeter (Willoughby Band member Andrew Hulme) was injured in a sports match.

John and Rhiannon wish to thank (in score order):
