Saturday afternoon saw Willoughby Band successfully defend their national title in the Open Brass Band Section of the Australian National Eisteddfod, held in Canberra's Llewellyn Hall.
The band performed their own choice from the recent Brisbane Nationals, Dove Descending by Philip Wilby. The performance impressed adjudicator Mark Ford, who expressed his regret that there was not a greater audience present to appreciate it.
Whilst many of the band travelled both to and from Canberra from Sydney for the event, several members took the opportunity for a short holiday, staying the night in town with their families.
Willoughby would particularly like to thank St Edmund's College Canberra for their assistance in supplying a rehearsal space, as well as those players who sacrificed their time on short notice for the event.
From 4barsrest downunder:
Only three bands competed in the brass section of the Australian National Eisteddfod held on Sunday 1 June in the nations capital, Canberra.
The results were:
1. Willoughby Band, Andrew Snell
2. Hall Village, Aaron Madden
3. St Mary's Band Club "Keller Brass", Paul Terracini
Adjudicators for the day were Mark Ford from Melbourne, and Kevin Cameron from Adelaide, who commented that the gradings of each band were quite obvious, with each band choosing appropriate repertoire and performing to a very high standard for their respective grades.
